The Truth About Men - Tracy Byrd

This is a music video by Tracy Byrd. Pay attention to the song lyrics and what they say about men. Do the video and lyrics try to make fun of stereotypes or are they meant to be taken seriously?

  1. In this video, the artists are poking fun at alot of different stereotypes, but they are also being serious about a few of them. I believe that it easy to see that there is humor behind what they are saying because most of the time the artists are laughing or smiling. However, there are a few stereotypes that they hit on that I feel is the main reason the song was made. The overall message of this video is to tell women that guys are not as complicated as they are made out to be all the time.

    1. I would have to agree with Zack on his interpretation of the music video. The artist does seem to draw out all of the major stereotypes associated with men and specific types of men. Through his lyrics he mock and illustrates these stereotypes in a comedic fashion. As the video progressed I got the same conception as Zack in the light that even though this artist is mocking making of the stereotypes, it still ultimately promotes these ideas. Although they are making fun and over exaggerating these stereotypes of men they are carrying them out through the lyrics and music video. It gave me the sense that they were acknowledging the stereotypes and were making fun of them, but didn't point out that they were false. They supported them in drawing out what is comprised of a stereotypical man and further promoted them through the acceptance of these conceptions. I don’t think the musicians was to destroy these common conceptions, but rather just show how ridiculous some of them can be.

  2. In this music video I think the lyrics make large assumptions that could possibly offend most men. It brings out very typical stereotypes that have been extremely overused and are not necessarily true anymore. While this song is probably just for entertainment and humor, I think this causes the song to appeal more to women. Since a lot of women tend to have problems understanding men, I think more women would like this song because the lyrics depict the way they view men as especially when they have been hurt by them and their stereotypical actions. On the other hand, the dancers in very tight revealing clothing could cause this video and song to appeal to some men because of the provocative dancing and stereotypical man characteristics shown. Other than being a humorous video with promiscuity, it affirms many stereotypes and keeps them alive even though most men don’t act the way the lyrics suggest.

  3. I think that most of things Tracy Byrd talks about in the video are not what most men do. The words only apply to a small portion of men, and i really do not want to group into all things he saying. He is signing about about one stereotype that exists. I do think it was made a joke, but I would hate for someone to take his words seriously. If some women feel this way about men then if most likely cause been listening to songs and watching videos like this. All Tracy Byrd does is try and play off of all the male stereotypes and while his doing this there are plenty of provocative women dancing around him. The idea is that what is going on around him is all that men think about. The only thing that he talks about that I can find somewhat true is that some men on Sunday’s, will be watching Nfl football games. This does no mean that all men’s life's stop on Sundays to watch football.

  4. This video reminds me of Pink's "Stupid Girls" which we saw earlier. In the video, Tracy Byrd sings about the "truth" about men. To illustrate this, he incorporates several male stereotypes into his lyrics. Some of these stereotypes include being tool fanatics, working on cars, and watching football. Strictly looking at the lyrics, one could think that they are completely serious. But the video shows that the song is making fun of stereotypes. Within the video, the artist seems light hearted and can be seen smiling/having fun (as Zack pointed out). This shows that the artist didn't intend for people to interpret the lyrics as fact. Some men could be offended by the proposed stereotypes, but I think that most men would recognize the song's humorous nature, and take it in stride.

    1. Good connection with the Pink music video, should men be offended by this song even though the video shows it to be light-hearted and funny?

  5. This music video is basically a long list of male stereotypes. Tracy Byrd says over and over again, “that’s the truth about men,” but I don’t really think he means it. I believe that Byrd is trying to make fun of the various stereotypes that surround the male sex, such as the love of golf and hate of shopping. He is making fun of the typical female view of men in this song and video. I think that most men would be offended by this video because it lists a lot of negative male qualities, but I think women would like it because they might find it relatable. Although, most of the things that Byrd lists are not what men actually do, and if the qualities listed do hold true they are highly exaggerated. This is why I think that Byrd’s music video is meant to be taken sarcastically.

  6. This is all a bunch of sterotypes that really do come from the assumed general feelings of a typical man. I'm sorry to say, but even through the image that satire that many would like to believe is there, these are more often than not, things men think about. Of course men will say that a woman looks amazing in a dress regardless of how they feel because most men want to avoid conflict. also, we really do want to watch sports/hang out with the guys/ many other things discussed in the video. those behaviors though lead to being uncivilized, rude, and a total douche. these are also shallow items which cause life little joy in the long term. it is these other things that cause real happiness in life.

  7. this list that this artist goes through to describe how men "actually" feel about life and women is full of many steriotypes that in many casses are legitimate in some respect or another. men do enjoy to spend time with their friends. also, men might tend to say that a dress looks great on a woman simply because they want to avoid conflict. the actions described are often seen as shallow or rude but the do not offer any forms of long term. true happiness comes from compassion and trust which is somewhat lacking in these examples given in the song.
