Blonde in a library

This is a mercedes benz commercial that uses humor to try to sell a car. Who do you think is the target audience of the commercial? How might the humor in the commercial help sell the car?

  1. In this vifeo, the target audience would be all the people who are in the market to buy a car. The blonde in the video is compared to another car that was made solely for the "beauty" of the car instead the "brains". Mercedes does a very good job at making this very funny, which only helps sell the car more. I feel like without the explanation at the end by the voice over that people would not have really understood the video that much.

    1. I agree with you that the target audience is to people who are buying the car, but I think that reveals a lot about who Mercedes targets to. There is a possibility that Mercedes thinks “dumb blondes” don’t have the money, brains, education, or ability to buy their expensive cars which is an obvious gender and appearance determined stereotype. I like your point that the blonde is a parallel to a car made with beauty and not brains because to me it makes the commercial make a lot more sense. I agree that the voice at the end of the commercial is completely necessary because otherwise the commercial would just seem stereotypical with no purpose in selling a car.

    2. I agree with Katie and Zack, about the target audience would be to people who are in the market buying cars. Mercedes is trying to use the humor of "dumb blondes" to gain support of their brand. People who are looking to buy cars may remember how "funny" this commercial is and feel comfortable supporting buying a car from Mercedes. Like Kaite spoken about when making this commercial they chose the woman in a certain way. Mercedes is allowing you to see their car in the form of a woman. By really showing us viewers that a car can not just be good looking but it must also be smart. I think this could be represented in a different way. I am not sure if it is the best way to gain customers. I also agree with out the words at the end, this would have just been exposing a stereotype with no reason. I'm unsure if blondes took this commercial to be very funny.

    3. I agree with Zack, Katie, and Aaron in that the target audience is anyone who is interested in/thinking about buying a new car. The commercial features a blonde trying to order food at a library, and it makes use of the "dumb blonde" stereotype. The blonde is meant to represent the competition's luxury cars. The message is that although the competition's cars may look good, they don't have the "brains"/technology that Mercedes puts into its cars. This commercial definitely uses humor to its advantage. As others have stated, people tend to remember the funny commercials. So when people are car shopping, they might remember that funny Mercedes commercial, which may subconsciously (or for some, consciously) influence them to buy a Mercedes. I also agree that the "Beauty Is Nothing Without Brains" slide is necessary to give viewers some context. Finally, i think some blondes may be offended by this commercial, but most would simply see the humor in it.

    4. I agree with Zach, Katie, Aaron and Chris that the target audience of this commercial is most definitely people in the market to purchase a car, but moreover, I think Mercedes is trying to target the educated consumer by making fun of the “dumb blond”. They might be doing this because they believe that those who are educated are the only ones who are able to afford a Mercedes. I also agree that the blond in the commercial is used to represent other car brands that are inferior to Mercedes because they are only pretty on the outside and not actually “smart.” I think Mercedes does a good job of implementing humor into their commercial to sell the car because the humor helps to showcase Mercedes’ superiority over other car brands.

    5. Should blondes be offended by this commercial, especially if the commercial is implying that blondes may not be able to afford nice cars such as Mercedes since they are considered to be dumb?

  3. it is easy to make the connection of how mercadies is using this depiction of humor to describe that their cars are more than just pretty pieces of metal but rather that they are much more underneath. this doesn't happen to be so with the woman in the commercial but regardless, its only using a common joke that everyone has herd and really doesn't actually harm anyone. this commercial doesn't use the woman for any great amount of sex appeal and they aren't stating that women are un-intellegent in genral, but rather play only off the joke commonly associated with blonds.

  4. In this Mercedes Benz commercial they use a comedic approach to attract their target audience. The target audience is developed through the metaphor that is illustrated in the video. The video captures an attractive stereotypical blond female in a library trying to order fast food. After being told it was a library she proceeds to order in a whisper, acknowledging the fact that she is in a library. This supports the development of her character being a “dumb blonde.” The commercial follows by saying that their car/company is designed with beauty and brain, essentially giving the customer the better car. I felt that by having the company makes fun of less intelligent people it is specifically marketing to a wealthy more educated group of people. The metaphor is somewhat stating that their cars resemble the people that buy them. I felt the commercial was successful in the fact in using this humor is gives the audience the concept behind their company and the cars they develop. It shows potential customers the importance of ingenuity behind the attractive appeal of their car.
